Claybord®, made by the Ampersand Company, is a very versatile painting surface and comes in smooth and textured finishes. In years past it has been used for scratchboard techniques, but now it can be painted with watercolors or other mediums. Mistakes can be corrected easily, and the paint can be manipulated to create a variety of detail, highlights, textures and washes. The textured surface acts much like good watercolor paper, while the smooth surface makes the artist feel as if he is using fingerpaints! As in the use of watercolor canvas, the watercolor must be sealed when finished in order to protect the surface from moisture. Also a gel medium may be added for further protection and create and oil painting-like texture. One may prefer to coat the surface with a watercolor varnish that has a UV filter for light protection. There is one made by GOLDEN. Claybord® comes in panels, and boxes in varying depths and sizes. When painting on the box, a frame is not required, as the artist can paint around the edges creating the "gallery wrap" effect as in canvases. |

Illustrating the Claybord® box, this is the same painting as above. | |
Sundown on the Marsh at the Ocean Course, Kiawah Island, SC Size: 6" x 24" on smooth surface An unusual size always intrigues me, as these paintings fit on soffits, and above windows, and also can sit on shelves, as this Claybord® box is 2" thick, and the edges are painted to wrap the image around the box. |

Les Oignons Size: 5" x 7" on textured Claybord® The result on th.e textured surface is often a softer look, whereas the smooth surface works best when painting shiney objects because of the high contrast that can be accomplished |
